Gaylen received a BFA from Moore College of Art & Design and a M.Ed. from Cabrini College.
She taught at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design and in the School District of Lancaster.
Her paintings and collages mix literary and visual elements, inspired by nature and conservation is a common theme throughout her work.
“Though I use a wide variety of media in my work, the common thread tying the pieces together is my inspiration: the beauty found in nature, at once ephemeral and eternal, transcendent. I feel a deep connection to my subject matter and the intimation of something greater and outside myself as I seek to interpret and re-create the natural world in my work. "
What moves me to paint or to piece together collage is the colorful and magical luminosity of a landscape, the intricate tones and textures in the shadows of a window reflection, or the devoted and loyal expression in a dog’s face.”
Gaylen has been a PA Council of the Arts artist-in-residence and has created murals, outdoor sculpture and portraiture for several schools and museums in Lancaster and York.
She has exhibited her work nationally in Locks Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, Pasadena Art Museum, Lancaster Museum of Art, PA College of Art and Design where she was an adjunct faculty member, and Red Raven Art Co., Lancaster, PA
